Mouth Guards Q & A

What is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard fits over your teeth and protects them from injury and excessive wear and tear. Wearing a mouthguard is often a good idea if you:

  • Play contact sports
  • Have sleep apnea
  • Snore
  • Grind or clench your teeth at night
  • Wear braces

When your teeth and gums are at risk of injury, trauma, or excessive wear and tear, having a mouthguard on hand is a good idea.

What are different types of mouthguards?

Various different mouthguards exist, but Dr. Kim works with you to determine which one best matches your individual needs.

CUSTOM MOUTHGUARDS

Dr. Kim uses a mold of your teeth to create a custom-fit mouthguard, which is one of the best ways to protect your teeth.

BOIL AND BITE MOUTHGUARDS

Boil and bite mouthguards are available at many drugstores and sporting goods stores. You’ll boil the mouthguard in water and bite down on it while it’s still soft, so it forms to the shape of your teeth. Look for boil and bite mouthguards that have the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.

STOCK MOUTHGUARDS

Stock mouthguards are preformed, ready-to-wear, and often inexpensive, but they don’t fit your teeth as well as custom-made or boil and bite mouthguards.

What is the benefit of a mouthguard?

The main benefit of wearing a mouthguard is protection for your teeth. It helps:

  • Prevent dental injuries and tooth trauma associated with contact sports
  • Reduce wear and tear, tooth damage, and pain associated with grinding and clenching
  • Improve the position of your lower jaw for better breathing if you have sleep apnea
  • Reduce snoring
  • Reduce gum recession due to grinding

If you play contact sports like hockey, tackle football, or basketball, wearing a mouthguard is often a requirement. Wearing one often saves you money in emergency dental care.

Which mouthguard is right for me?

Dr. Kim examines your mouth to determine which type of mouthguard best matches your needs based on your bite, sleeping habits, lifestyle, and the presence of health conditions. Custom-made mouthguards, while more expensive than boil and bite and stock mouthguards, offer the best protection.
